Abstract/Summary: The automated recognition of machining features from a design model has been studied for more than 30 years. This paper examines that problem for the case when the input design model, a feature-based construction history model, and the output machining feature model, are both represented in formats conforming to application protocols (APs) of the international standard ISO 10303 (STEP). Many feature types have close correspondences permitting easy translation between the two formats, but such translations will need to be supplemented by the use of methods based on the analysis of geometry and topology in a boundary representation model associated with the input model.
