  • Delivering Sustainable Livelihoods to Indigenous Communities through Ecotourism: Insights from Western Odisha, India   Order a copy of this article
by Sachin C. Pujar, Niharranjan Mishra
Abstract: This paper is set in the context of five ecotourism hotspots in the western districts of Odisha, India. The main objectives of the study are to identify the positives and negatives of conservation and development actions and outcomes from the integration of ecotourism into indigenous livelihoods in Western Odisha. The study used mixed methods research to interview 300 households representing 25 villages, service providers, and government officials at various levels. The results indicate no significant improvement in indigenous livelihoods, a lack of educational components in ecotourism, and a general mismatch between policy and practice. The paper suggests diversification of tourism activities that include local cultures and way of life to create an enabling environment and encourage local participation. The study helps to gain important insights into the social component of ecotourism using indigenous livelihoods as a focal point.

  • Senior tourism constraints in Mexico: a sociocultural approach   Order a copy of this article
by Carlos Monterrubio, Martha M. Mendoza-Ontiveros, Javier Pérez
Abstract: Research on senior tourism has been developed mainly in countries of the Global North and has considerably ignored the sociocultural contexts in which tourism constraints are configured. From a sociocultural perspective, this study explores senior tourism constraints in Mexico. Through in-depth interviews with 16 older people, it was revealed that interpersonal constraints are deeply associated with the meanings and cultural value of family in Mexico. Due to its centrality in Mexican culture, family functions as a fundamental factor in tourism motivations, experiences, constraints, and facilitators. It is concluded, on the one hand, that a chronological criterion is too restrictive to understand the tourist experiences of the elderly and, on the other, that sociocultural factors can play a central role in constraints on senior tourism.

  • Sun, beach ... and nightclubs: A study on the Nightlife and tourism in Ibiza (1950-1971)   Order a copy of this article
    by Joan Carles Cirer-Costa
Abstract: In the 1960s Spain received millions of European tourists attracted by the Mediterranean climate and beaches, but who also wanted to listen to music, dance and have fun, a demand that was satisfied by the nightclubs. In this paper we analyse the nightclubs of one of the great destinations of the time, the Island of Ibiza, using their advertising as the main source of information. We will determine their range of shows and with it, the interests of the tourists who visited them. We will discover that their numbers grew spectacularly despite the fact that they thrived in a political context that was not at all favourable: francoist dictatorship.
Keywords: tourist behaviour; mass tourism; nightclubs; music; dancing; Ibiza; Francoism.
