Interoperability is an intrinsic characteristic of a generic entity (organisation, system, process, etc.) allowing a "symbiotic" interaction with other entity/entities, to different degrees of simplicity, to cooperate for achieving common goals. Interoperability has been strictly applied in automation and integration at the hardware level. IJESII addresses practical issues in designing/implementing effective interoperable production settings and more basic research issues, highlighting implications that both software and organisational strategies have for human welfare. This perspective acknowledges the complexity of interoperability topics.
