Special issue on: "Design and Management Within New Product Development Projects"

Guest Editors:
Dr. Marc Zolghadri, Bordeaux University, France
Dr. Claudia Eckert, Cambridge University, UK

New product development (NPD) projects constitute one of the key success factors of firms. It is therefore necessary to manage them as efficiently as possible in order to deliver successful products on time and to budget; and assess risks in NPD processes. Many NPD projects deviate from their initial target due to modifications or changes to customer needs as well as internal or external constraints. Other NPD projects may be simply stopped due to uncontrolled parameters and unidentified constraints arising from various processes within the NPD project such as the product design process or the supply chain design, and through identification of the most relevant network of partners and networking or the NPD project management by itself.

Researchers from a number of different communities have been addressing these problems. While research has yielded rich results, providing new insights and effective tools and techniques, the research is still fragmented. Academics have begun working to bring these parallel processes together since the mid-90s but further research is required before providing satisfactory answers of these real problems.

The main idea of this special issue is to gather original research results which will foster more efficient new product development projects by focusing mainly on the coupling of internal and external processes of NPD projects.
