Special issue on: "Design for Digital Fabrication of Functional Components"

A functional component refers to a complex-shaped object with specific functionalities, which make the component possess two or more desired incompatible properties simultaneously in different parts of it. Thus, the component could have, for instance, different material constituents and/or different microstructures in different locations within the component. With the development of rapid prototyping (also known as solid freeform fabrication) and other advanced digital fabrication technologies, it has become possible that the complex-shaped functional component with varying local constituent and/or microstructures can be produced under the control of the local materials compositions. Applications can be found in many industrial areas, such as aerospace, automobile, chemical engineering and biomedical engineering, etc., where the functionally graded materials (FGMs) and/or porous biotissues are typically desired.

This special issue solicits original contributions to fundamental research with relevance to design for digital fabrication of functional components, which highlight the state of the art, emerging technologies, and recent successes and define major research challenges.
