Special Issue on: “Design Space Exploration and Optimisation in Product Development”

Guest Editor: Dr. G. Gary Wang, The University of Manitoba, Canada and Dr. Bernard Yannou, Ecole Centrale Paris, France

Modern product development often involves complex analyses from multiple disciplines, consideration from product life-cycle aspects and making difficult trade-off decisions, and in the meantime achieving optimal product design at the lowest costs and in the shortest time. To systematically integrate various design perspectives to achieve the optimal design is a very challenging task. Such integration and optimisation capability is, however, still in great demand and could significantly benefit all manufacturing industries.

Design space exploration and optimisation is an important and often necessary step in product development. Research in this area has yielded many promising approaches and strategies. This special issue of IJPD aims at presenting the state-of-the-art in this area, and promoting further research in order to provide engineers with practical tools supporting integration and optimisation. The issue will focus on theories and methods on design space, space exploration, design evaluation, and design optimisation.

Potential readers to be addressed by this special issue are scientists in the fields of design optimisation, decision-based design, and design automation, as well as product development engineers and executives in manufacturing industries.
