International Journal of Sport Management and Marketing
Special Issue on: "The Management and Marketing of Ice Hockey"
Guest Editor : Norman J. O'Reilly, Laurentian University, Canada
Ice hockey is major sport in North America and burgeoning business in Europe. Although it has impassioned following in certain countries (e.g. Canada, Sweden, Russia) and is growing in stature in others (e.g. United States, Germany), its global popularity remains scattered at best. In many nations, ice hockey remains a minor sport with limited or non-existent following. This dichotomy provides the managers and marketers of ice hockey with both significant opportunity and tremendous challenge as the sport tries to succeed in an increasingly competitive entertainment marketplace.
The aim of this special issue is to garner attention for the sport of ice hockey. The goal is to enhance a relatively small body of literature and to encourage sport management and sport marketing researchers to consider ice hockey for their research. Practically, the hope is to publish a group of articles that will provide management tools for practitioners and form the basis for continued research in the area.
The scope of topics sought for this special edition is broad as the issue seeks to examine the management and marketing of ice hockey in an international context. As such, research from all disciplines of management (marketing, operations, human resources, strategy, etc.) is welcome. Further, research related to any aspect of ice hockey, including professional hockey, hockey and the media, Olympic hockey, women's hockey, youth hockey and international hockey are all welcome.
