International Journal of Renewable Energy Technology
Special Issue on: "Biomass and Bioenergy"
Guest Editor: Dr. Mohamed G. Hassan, American University in Cairo, Egypt
Assistant Guest Editor: Dr Ihab Shigidi Al-Neelain, University Sudan, Sudan
Biomass - that is, all plant and plant-derived materials including animal manure, not just starch, sugar, oil crops already used for food and energy -has great potential to provide renewable energy for the near future. Policy makers and governmental bodies are committed to expanding the role of biomass as an energy source. In particular, they support biomass fuels and products:
- as a way to minimise waste and reduce the need for fuel imports;
- to support the growth of agriculture, forestry, and rural economies; and
- to foster major new industries making a variety of fuels, chemicals, and other products.
A key question is how large a role could biomass play in responding to the global energy demands. Assuming that economic and financial policies and advances in conversion technologies make biomass fuels and products more economically viable, could the bio-refinery industry be large enough to have a significant impact on energy supply and oil imports? Would the biomass potential be sufficiently large to justify the necessary capital replacements in the fuels, energy and automobile sectors?
Subject CoverageThe objective of the special issue is to provide a means for the publication and interchange of information, on an international basis, on biomass and bioenergy, including, but not limited to:
- Research and development
- Design
- Construction
- Materials technology and production
- Policy and planning
- Environmental protection
- Sustainable development
- Economics
- Installation
- Maintenance
- Operations
- Regulations
- Licensing
- Future directions for development
