Eurasian logistics has not received that much attention, even if the concentration of population, future economic growth, and opportunity to utilise all available transportation modes in internal transport are all present. Quite often Eurasian logistics is simply seen as a sea container transportation or express air freight issue. However, the Arctic sea route as well as railway landbridge through Transsib are also workable options for specific niche transportation needs and connect various emerging hinterland destinations in a more effective and efficient manner than before (e.g. connecting consumers of Moscow/Russia or Kiev/Ukraine with Asian products by rail instead of the sea-road option). It is also evident that future development could offer new opportunities for periphery regions, since the Arctic sea route or Transsib could give Northern Europe a considerably better logistics platform to serve as a distribution hub for larger European markets. For manufacturing and retail/trade companies, these new transportation mode options could open up a considerable competitive edge by utilising shorter lead times, lower transportation costs and/or leaner distribution and supply operations.
This special issue is future-oriented, and we encourage authors to build their proposals on considering how the future could possibly shape up in Eurasia, regarding logistics. Therefore, different scenarios for possible development paths are of considerable interest. Among these, we are interested in possible new mainstream developments in areas such as outsourcing, warehousing, transportation systems and distribution. These, of course, could arise from exotic context(s), even outside of Eurasian landscape, but applications of new practices should be well presented and justified in the context described above. We also encourage manuscripts to be forward-looking by supporting further economic growth, sustainability, employment and investments. Case studies supporting these objectives from different sector actors, municipalities and/or geographical areas are also welcome.
