Abstract: The strategy that hotels employ to design the properties is a reflection of the socio-demographic changes in the society. Based on a review of the history of urban hotel design, the article argues that the social changes brought about by the advancement of technology as well as the popularity of social media, the newly emerged business and services in the sharing economy, as well as the scarcity of land resources in urban area contribute to the emergence of the component hotel. The component hotel is defined as an urban hotel property that has satellite guest services (referred to as components) such as accommodation, food and beverage, and wellness located outside of a central core facility which is located within an urban centre. The design details were also discussed in the paper.
