Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore and study the antecedents of character merit and dimensions of organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) and their influence on volunteers in a non-profit organisation. The study also examines the performance outcome of character merits inculcated to enhance OCB of trained members of the organisation. Inductive and deductive research methodologies were adapted to interpret the data, which was collected by visiting 18 states, spread across North-East-West-South geographies of India. Stratified random sampling technique was administered to collate data from 1,084 samples. The findings reveal that character building through training may lead to development of OCB, which would further enhance the performance outcome of individuals in public life. The findings indicate that character could be built by continuity in training. The 'shakha model' of training methodology illustrated in this study may be adapted in public organisations for improving performance.
