International Journal of Public Sector Performance Management (IJPSPM), Vol. 4, No. 3, 2018

Abstract: As one of the first endeavours in the public sector that assess organisational consequences of hiring female employees in male-dominated occupations, this study examined organisational consequences that gender diversity would bring to male-dominated occupations, using a sample of law enforcement agencies. With law enforcement agencies' data from 464 cities with more than 50,000 residents in the USA, as well as Uniform Crime Reports Data, multiple regression analyses were conducted to find the effects of gender diversity. According to the findings, as more female sworn officers were hired in law enforcement agencies, conflicts between genders among sworn officers increased, but crime control performance was not significantly affected. Managerial implications are discussed.
