Special Issue on: "Technology-Transformed Learning: Going Beyond the One-to-One Model?"

Guest Editors :
Lung-Hsiang Wong, National Institute of Education, Singapore
Hiroaki Ogata, Tokushima University, Japan

The advance of personal computing devices, from personal computers to mobile devices, has been gradually changing the landscape of the technology-transformed learning. This facilitates the incorporation of one-to-one computing into education and opens up endless possibilities for the design and enactment of innovative teaching and learning models (or the enhancement of pre-existing models), such as perpetual and ubiquitous learning, personalized learning, authentic and contextualized learning, seamless learning, digital classroom, rapid knowledge co-construction, among others.

This leads to the further empowerment of the learners in deciding what, where, when and how they would learn and whom they would learn with/from. After the initial hype, however, there have been voices within the researcher community to reassess the notion of one-to-one computing in classroom and informal learning, such as whether and how one-to-one settings may impact peer collaboration and teachers' roles, the issues of student, teacher, school and social readiness, as well as the explorations of alternative or hybrid settings of many-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-many, and one-to-one configurations.

This special issue deals with the fundamental concerns and challenges in adopting one-to-one computing in either or both classroom and informal learning settings. The collection of papers will serve as an international forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange their thoughts and contributions and set future directions in one-to-one technology-transformed learning.

Authors of selected outstanding papers published at the pre-conference workshop on the same theme at International Conference on Computers in Education 2011 (“ICCE 1:1 workshop” hereafter) will be invited to submit revised and expanded version of their papers to this special issue. In addition, this call for papers is open to any interested party to submit their work. For the latter case, authors are required to submit a proposal of 300-500 words (with paper title and authors’ names/affiliations) to icce1to1@gmail.com by October 24, 2011.
