Guest Editor: Professor Jose L. Salmeron, University Pablo de Olavide, Spain

Business Intelligence (BI) can take many different forms. In general, we can say that BI is a computerised system for helping make decisions in an analytic-based and prospective approach. BI systems help firms’ coherent and data-based decisions-making. Most companies using BI for strategic and tactical decision support. In a competitive and hostile environment such as the current one, it is no longer enough for the managers to make the right choices, they must also make and implement them as quickly as possible. In this context, BI support is needed for optimising business operations. Such systems are called operational BI.

The focus of this special issue is on bringing together researchers and practitioners from the areas of BI, data mining and operational knowledge management. The technical objective is to exchange ideas and techniques from those areas as well as to establish a framework for the development of methodologies that integrate decision support and operational knowledge management. Consequently, papers that address these topics or those that extend technical and domain knowledge to operational BI are especially sought.
