Microbial immobilisation technology has been developed and widely employed in wastewater treatment for decades. In general, microbial immobilisation can be classified as biofilm, aerobic and anaerobic granulation. By using microbial immobilisation technology, different species of bacteria with various biological functions can be immobilised into one entity which has characteristics of a compact and dense structure, quick sludge-water separation ability and high biomass retention. These advantages in turn lead to the design of a highly compact bioreactor which has been successfully applied for effective removal of organics, nutrients (N and P) as well as recalcitrant and toxic chemicals from both municipal and industrial wastewater.

In recent years, intensive research efforts have been dedicated to the fundamental mechanisms of microbial immobilisation and the potential applicability of this technology in treating a variety of specific types of wastewaters. Therefore, we are calling for papers which report the up-to-date progresses on the mechanism of microbial immobilisation as well as the application of this technology in the area of wastewater treatment.

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere
