Special Issue on: “Virtual Design of Industrial Systems with Manufacturing and Assembling Errors”

Guest Editor: Dr. Pier Paolo Valentini, University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, Italy

The field of virtual engineering has gained significance in recent years, fuelled by the availability of numerical procedures and software developed to support designers and analysts. The use of more and more realistic digital mock-ups not only increased designer productivity, but allowed detailed and reliable evaluation of the design choices at an early stage. Obviously, such capabilities stimulated the research in this particular field and the interest of the industrial market.

In many applications, there is a requirement to simulate and test not only an ideal model of the product or process but also to include drifts from the design specifications, such as mechanical errors, tolerances, defects, etc. The assessment of their influence on the overall performance plays an important role for achieving a robust design.

The focus of this special issue of IJCAT is to highlight state-of-the-art research and applications in the field of virtual design of mechanical systems with particular reference to methodologies and techniques to analyse and control the influence of errors, faults, and inaccuracies.

Subject Coverage
This special issue welcomes both academic and industrial contributions in all aspects of numerical and virtual engineering to simulate advanced mechanical systems with manufacturing and assembling errors, including but not limited to:
  • Tolerance allocation problems in industrial assemblies (i.e. automotive, aerospace, medical, etc.)
  • Shape and modelling errors
  • Virtual simulation of mechanical and mechatronic systems with errors
  • Errors in human-machine interaction
  • Optimisation of assembling procedures
  • Virtual reality in modelling, manufacturing and assembling
  • Robust design
  • New design strategies for industrial products
  • Multibody dynamics of complex systems
  • Influence of manufacturing and assembling errors on product performance
  • Stochastic design
