Special Issue on: “Know How? Challenges in Knowledge and Innovation Management in Alliances”

Guest Editors: Dr. Siegfried Gudergan and Dr. Tyrone Pitsis, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia

As businesses find themselves in increasingly complex, ambiguous and uncertain environments, they have sought to form a range of organisational arrangements in order to share risk, costs and rewards, as well as to ensure more adaptable and flexible organisational forms to cope with such unstable environments. However, with the move towards such business relationships, such as joint ventures, strategic alliances and private-public partnerships, to name but a few, comes a real challenge in how organisations manage and utilise knowledge in interorganisational relationships.

While the coordination of such collaborative relationships presents challenges in itself, the management of knowledge and innovation within them to facilitate learning and, ultimately, innovation becomes much more problematic.

The purpose of this special issue is to provide theoretical and empirical research that helps explain how management systems and practices facilitate learning and innovation management in alliances. Empirical research employing multiple methods, conceptual papers utilising a variety of theoretical perspectives, and manuscripts addressing multiple levels of analysis (e.g., individual, alliance unit, organisational) are especially encouraged.

Subject Coverage
Research papers on the following set of issues and similar topics are invited:
  • How do different leadership behaviours affect knowledge development and innovation in strategic alliances?
  • Which governance mechanisms influence knowledge exploration and exploitation in strategic alliances?
  • How does knowledge complexity influence the effect of knowledge ambiguity on knowledge adaptability in alliances operating under unstable environments?
  • How does alliance durability moderate the relationship between alliance know-how transferability and improvised alliance learning?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities of managing people in alliances?
