Special Issue on: "Structural Health Monitoring, a Lifecycle Resource: New Physical Principles, Sensors, Instrumentation and Applications"

Modern civilization is characterized on the one hand by putting into operation extra-large and complex engineering objects and intensification of their usage often under extreme conditions, and on the other hand by introduction of increasingly tough safety standards.

The outstanding potential to solve this problem which has been demonstrated by early structural health monitoring (SHM) systems in civil, aircraft, ship, and space engineering, has brought about significant efforts from scientists and engineers directed towards the development of such systems.

In recent years, new physical and mathematical approaches have been proposed in the strategy of detecting defects in materials and objects, in real-time measurement and data analyzing techniques. New types of sensors have been developed together with new ways of integrating them into ramified measuring systems. Significant experience has been accumulated in operating previously-developed SHM systems, which has opened up new opportunities to help engineers improve the safety and maintainability of critical structures. The recent results obtained in the course of the development of structural health monitoring require generalization. Therefore it is felt necessary to collect papers presenting these results in one special issue.

  • Ramified SHM measuring systems
  • Storage, processing, interpretation and transmission of SHM data
  • SHM applications, estimation of exploitation safety by SHM techniques

Notes for Prospective Authors

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. (N.B. Conference papers may only be submitted if the paper was not originally copyrighted and if it has been completely re-written).
