Special Issue on: "Management Control Systems and Service Operations"

Guest Editor: Adebayo Agbejule and Marja Naaranoja, Vaasa University of Applied Sciences, Finland

The special issue addresses the complex issues of management control systems in service operations. Despite growing dominance of service sectors in most economies, there has been limited research to systematically examine the design and use of management control systems in service organisations. Modern management systems such as the balanced scorecard place emphasis on administrative and personal control so that the objectives of organisational goals can be communicated and reinforced. An important feature of service firms relevant to the design of management control system is the significant human participation in the “production process” which presents challenges to researchers when presenting conceptual framework in the design of management control system.

The introduction of digitisation has created new information services such as web-based banking and postal services. For many service industries, digitisation as part of technological offerings and processes underpin the extent of value creation and basis of exchange. Management accounting information can be useful in reporting and monitoring value creation and to align changes in the types of cost incurred with revenues generated in the new digital environment. This special issue will address topics across new form of services that are being created in the new business environment in areas such as how strategy implementation, organisational designs, management systems, management and employee behaviour influence corporate and managerial performance. In addition, research can explore how selected performance measurement systems and management control system in service operations are more or less effective in today’s dynamic business environment.

The aim of the special issue is to capture the current state of management control system in different service operations around the globe, applying different perspectives and analyses. Qualitative and quantitative approaches are encouraged.
