Abstract: Stand-alone hybrid photovoltaic (PV)/wind power supply system is an effective solution to provide power to areas that are located far from the electrical power grid. To efficiently and economically utilise renewable energy resources of wind and solar, the optimum configuration is very important for hybrid PV/wind power supply system. Considering the loss of power supply probability (LPSP) and percentage of energy excess as penalty function, the economic model of optimal configuration was built with the objective that takes annual equipment cost, operating and maintenance cost, and replacement cost into account. The meteorological data including wind speed, solar radiation and temperature were input. An improved particle swarm optimisation (IPSO) method is used to find the best configuration of the system. The results show that the IPSO can comprehensively evaluate the economy efficiency of wind, solar and battery, and reduce redundant investment to satisfy customer's diversification of reliability requirements according to meteorological conditions.
