Abstract: Asian studies in Israeli institutions of higher education are a relatively new field of study and research. The late start in launching Asian studies in Israel has many reasons. The first has to do with perception. Geographically, Israel is a part of the Asian continent, lying as it were on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea and it has often been referred to Western Asia, but Israel does not consider its culture and civilisation or religion as part of the great traditions of East and Southeast Asia. Today, Israel and East and Southeast Asia have much to offer each other.
