Special Issue on: "Managing Hospitality and Tourism Organisations: Innovation, Creativity and Enterprise"

Guest Editors:
Dr Peter Robinson and Dr Ade Oriade, University of Wolverhampton, UK
Dr Andy Clegg, University of Chichester, UK

Tourism and Hospitality organisations represent a large and growing sector of the world economy accounting for 292 million jobs and generating 10.2% of Global GDP. The sector is dynamic and entrepreneurial and serves domestic and international markets alike. The industry thrives on information ranging from face-to-face communication to electronic retrieval of data, and makes extensive use of technology from both customers’ and providers’ perspectives. Like many other economic activities, it is vulnerable to external pressures such that have been witnessed at the turn of the millennium in terms of economic recession, political agitations and environmental issues.

Whilst the sector is synonymous with a small number of well-known brands offered by multinational organisations, the overall structure of the industry is based upon a vast number of SMEs and micro-enterprises. These small businesses are often lifestyle businesses, rural enterprises which have diversified into the tourism sector or innovative businesses responding to demand for tourism and hospitality. Within these smaller firms are multiple examples of innovative business models, innovative products and enterprising approaches to managing, growing and sustaining businesses in often challenging locations.

The dynamic nature of the industry on the one hand dictates that practitioners and academics keep tab of happenings in the sector/subject area. Ever increasing external pressure on the other hand warrants development of innovative products and demonstration of management creativity in dealing with mounting external pressure bearing in mind optimal use of resources.

The content of the special issue is projected to include an extensive range of issues relating to innovation, creativity and enterprise in managing hospitality and tourism companies. The special issue will aim to present an array of empirical, conceptual and short commentary papers highlighting both theoretical and practical implications that will interest the readership of academics and practitioners.
