The aim of this special issue is to examine emerging research on ethics and social responsibility. As there has been an increased emphasis globally on sustainability, the environment and social issues, it is becoming more important for organisations to embed ethics and social responsibility into their strategies. This has become more evident with governance mechanisms and regulations requiring the usage of an ethical and social responsibility stance within company structures (Dana, 2011). In addition, there has been more emphasis by consumers about ethics and social responsibility and this is shown in the increased buying power of organic and ethically certified products and services. There are numerous reasons for having an ethical perspective in an organisation that is linked to consumer buying power but also the increased recognition of the importance of being part of a global society (Dana, 1996).

Ethics is also evident in work/life policies within organisations that focus on how to integrate a fairer and transparent workplace. This is shown in more organisations having social inclusion policies and equal opportunity measures in order to facilitate greater diversity within their organisations. This ethical orientation is shown in the deeper understanding about how organisations, individuals and society can combine their initiatives to create shared value (Dana, 1991). More organisations are focusing on the concept of shared value as a way to highlight the interplay between ethics and social responsibility by showing that it is in everyone’s interest to do this. In the past the emphasis was one sided by now there is a growing recognition of the role everyone can play when they collaborate (Ferreira, Dana and Ratten, 2017).

We welcome qualitative as well as quantitative and mixed methodologies, as long as they are well grounded in the literature. Please refer to the following articles:
