Abstract/Summary: The economic development of the supply chain interrelates with many ecological and social aspects. In addition, the danger of production resource deficit challenges modern supply chain management and requires the development of frameworks for synthesis and analysis of resource- and energy-efficient supply chains. In this study, we address the issue of interrelating environment and economic sustainability. As supply chains are not static but highly dynamic and permanently evolving systems, sustainability of these networks should also be considered as a dynamic category. In order to take into account dynamics of resource consumption and output performance, the developed mathematical framework is based on a combined application of modern control theory and operations research and applies the methods of optimal programme control, attainable sets and the concept of stability of adaptive systems. As a result, we propose to consider the supply chain global stability as the property to achieve a balance between the economic output performance and resource consumption. The developed method for balancing SC resource consumption and output performance further our understanding in SC complexity and stability and depicts the importance of considering complexity and stability in SC sustainability.
