In the past, one traditional strategy of banks has been the competitive strategy of competing on the basis of size. Competitiveness means that banks with extensive branch networks tended to capture more customers than those with fewer branches. However, the banks are currently facing competitive pressures which are forcing them to move from single delivery channel towards integrated delivery channels in order to meet changing customer demands.

In addition, competitors today in the financial service industry are no longer just rival banks. Non-banks have entered the financial services market and now compete in launching banking innovations. Having an extensive number of brick-and-mortar branches and controlling a network for clearing and settlements no longer guarantees that banks will have a competitive advantage over non-banks.

In this special issue, we will focus on how the banks could leverage their strategies to compete in an environment of increased competition within the financial services industry. We also encourage contributions that analyse the direction of competition and innovation under changing market conditions (competition among banks and between banks and non-banks). The issue brings together academics, practitioners, researchers, and aims to deliver a reference edition for all those interested in the management of innovations and increased competition in the financial service industry.
