Requirements regarding product design and development have got dramatic changes due to the ever growing constraints regarding safety, security and sustainability, to cite a few (Wind & Mahajan, 1997; Sharma & Iyer, 2012; Yassine et al., 2017; Beuche & Spinczyk, 2003; Weber, 2002).
These features, being often cogent or with no apparent added value for the product, are usually hidden to consumers, who are quite better aware about quality, reliability, price and features (Smirnov et al., 2018).
In such a scenario, it may be of prime importance to find innovative approaches in new product development process within limited available resources (Keupp & Gassmann, 2013) and considering features regarding the safety of use, its sustainability and any other cogent or implicit constraint that may be needed for a product. These constraints may also be in-addition to internal constraints, regarding as example scarcity of financial, technological, innovative, human-resource (Heinzen & Höflinger, 2017) and managerial skills. Product life cycle is another important aspect in developing and implementing innovative approaches in product development process as sustainability based life cycle cost surpasses pure economic calculations (Klöpffer, 2003; Seram et al., 2016; Khalil et al., 2015). As another example, integration of new product development process with sustainability issues has been categorized into data management, process management and project management (Gmelin & Seuring, 2014; Haber & Fargnoli, 2017; Bélanger et al., 2016). This integration may streamline and facilitate the implementation of new tools, techniques and approaches in new product development processes (Brook & Pagnanelli, 2014; Pujari, 2006; Kalish et al., 2018; Fargnoli et al., 2014; Bretschneider et al., 2015; Anantana et al., 2015). The present Special Issue is aimed to unfold the potential approaches to product development, design and production encompassing cogent or expected featured that may constrain design/production times, product performances and/or product quality.
