Wireless networks have gained much popularity in recent years due to their ease of accessibility and mobility. However, as the dimensions of wireless devices decreases and as the network density increases, energy and bandwidth resources become increasingly scarce and innovative networking solutions must be developed to overcome these challenges. Moreover, due to the large demand for wireless communications in different applications, wireless networks have evolved into various forms including wireless metropolitan networks, local area networks, mesh networks, ad hoc networks, and sensor networks etc. Integration over heterogeneous systems is then necessary to fully capitalise on the functionalities and services they provide. Advances in theory are required to achieve these tasks and new applications may arise to leverage these advantages.
This special issue is intended to cover the recent advances in theory and application of wireless, ad hoc, and sensor networks. It will additionally select high quality papers from the 5th Workshop on Wireless, Ad Hoc, and Sensor Networks (WASN 2009) to be held in Hsinchu, Taiwan, September 2009.
