In the modern world, computer vision (CV) is dominating all advances and their applications in science, engineering and technology. The CV covers a wide range of research topics which includes biometrics and its applications. In all applications of CV, the role of image enhancement and pre-processing is significant since the performance of all succeeding stages of computer vision as well as biometrics is determined by the quality of the images acquired and preprocessed. In human vision, the quality of the image may not matter much but the CV based applications need quality images or else the result or outcome of the applications may not be appropriate. In order to ensure good quality images, we generally use some suitable image enhancement techniques and pre-processing methods either in a spatial or transform domain. In both the domains of enhancement and pre-processing techniques, numerous methods are available in literature for improving various types of quality measures, such as contrast, brightness, picture signal-noise-ratio (PSNR), histogram etc. However, the biggest and all-time challenge in all image processing tasks is the lack of a robust method that could be applied in all applications working on different types of images. Therefore, for different images and different applications, the enhancement and pre-processing methods are chosen differently, either as different methods or as a framework of methods.
To deal with the challenges related to robust approaches in the areas of image enhancement and pre-processing techniques, the investigation and study of robustness is much needed because the robust methods would help in reducing the computation time as well as improving the performance of the biometrics.
Though the image enhancement techniques and pre-processing methods are used in all applications of CV as well as biometrics, the focus in this special issue will be only on robust image enhancement approaches used only for biometrics and biometric-based applications.
