Title: An exploratory investigation of display information attributes of reverse/parking aids

Abstract: As a starting point in developing a systematic protocol for prescribing display attributes for a Reversing/Parking Collision Avoidance System (RP-CAS), a study was conducted to quantify the common attributes and information constructs conveyed by RP-CAS displays. The identified constructs can then form the foundation of a protocol which will provide (i) a conceptual framework within which to relate display alternatives, (ii) a structure to guide the decomposition of display alternatives into constituent dimensions, and (iii) a vocabulary of display dimensions for the prescription of display standards. The Repertory Grid method was applied to the display design dimensions of RP-CAS display alternatives evaluated by seven Human Factors specialists. The analysis of the elicited construct set suggests that displays can be discriminated on dimensions for the content of (1) spatial information and (2) hazard information, as well as for the format applied to (3) object representation and (4) hazard coding. This framework may now provide the vocabulary for design dimensions that can be applied in the standardisation of CAS Displays.
