Abstract: This paper is based on an address given at a conference entitled Engine and Environment: Which Fuel for the Future?, Graz, Austria, July 23-24, 1991. The author discusses the work of US companies on a variety of engines, including gas turbine, steam, Stirling, rotary and diesel, and then looks at alternative fuels.
