Title: A multicriteria approach to optimum design of vehicle brakes

Abstract: A multicriteria optimisation model for disc brakes is presented. In this model the objective functions are: abrasive wear of the brake disc, surface of the brake shoe and volume of the brake disc. The first objective function represents the working time criterion, whereas the second and third objective functions reflect the weight of the brake. The design variables are the dimensions of the brake and the pressure between a friction pad and a brake disc. The restrictions imposed on these variables are: the geometric constraints which reflect the size of the car wheel and behaviour constraints which restrict the pressure between the brake shoe lining and the brake disc, the mean slip between the surface of the brake shoe, and the surface of the brake disc and the temperature at the brake disc in single braking. The interactive multicriteria optimisation system is used to solve the model. The system allows the designer to participate actively in the process of seeking an optimal solution which satisfies the conflicting criteria, and his preferences. A numerical example for the design of a Volvo car brake is presented.
