Abstract: The present paper deals with a computer simulation study of a vehicle|s directional response in combined steering and braking manoeuvres: 1. Braking during lane change; 2. Braking in steady turn. A non-linear 7 degree of freedom vehicle model is utilized in the simulation study. The model is described in part 1 of this paper. The effect of road surface condition, front/rear wheel locking time and tyre-traction parameters (longitudinal and lateral stiffness) on vehicle direction stability are investigated.

Keywords: vehicle braking; direction stability; tyre characteristics; unsteady motion; skidding; vehicle dynamics; steering; simulation; directional response; vehicle modelling; road surfaces; wheel locking time; tyre-traction.
