Title: Computer-aided experimental system for vehicle development

Abstract: In vehicle design and development, shortening developmental periods, improving efficiency, and improving vehicle quality have been important subjects in past years. With these objectives in mind, the Vehicle Design and Development Department, Nissan Motor Company, has been utilizing computers for CAD/CAM, CAE (Computer Aided Experiments), SA (Structural Analysis), EIM (Engineering Information Management), etc., and has been obtaining good results. The present paper describes the purpose and manner of introducing CAE to the design and development process. It also outlines an on-line system for vehicle performance tests, noise and vibration analysis, heat resistance tests, brake and engine performance tests, exhaust emission analysis, etc., which is a hierarchical structure system incorporating three host computers and twenty-seven minicomputers. Finally, the future use of the CAE system is discussed.
