Abstract: Recent developments in methods of analysis for noise and vibration have advanced to the extent that they are now being applied to the analysis of vehicle interior noise in the higher frequency range, including road noise. Analysis of road noise by these methods, however, is executed mainly from the viewpoints of body structure or acoustic characteristics. This paper describes a tyre/suspension system model developed for the purpose of investigating road noise with respect to the input forces transmitted to the body from the road through the tyre and suspension. The modelling method is based on the combination of a tyre modal model and a physical suspension model using MSC/NASTRAN. The tyre modal model is adopted to describe faithfully the tyre behaviour in the higher-frequency range. The effects of the model parameters on the input forces applied to the body, which is assumed to be completely rigid, are investigated. By comparing these efforts with the body acoustic sensitivity analysed experimentally, we can obtain effective parameters far reducing road noise.
