Abstract: Drowsiness while driving is a major cause of road accident of a serious nature. An alertness index was formulated. This index was related to the performance of a subject driving on a test course and on ordinary roads and to the subject|s perception of drowsiness. A description is given of characteristics of a state of reduced alertness in terms of physiological changes in the subject and the steering pattern displayed.
