Abstract: The technology of telematics-based flexible and distance learning (TFDL) is now changing the way we learn and teach. It has obvious implications for medical and para-medical education and continuous training. This paper reviews first the socio-economic pressures leading to the emergence of a European-wide TFDL infrastructure and the EC actions which promote it. The results of these actions are summarised and specific projects discussed. The future orientations are presented and a scenario is proposed for their applications to medical and paramedical education and training.

Keywords: telematics applications; flexible and distance learning; European Commission; medical informatics; medical and para-medical education and training.
