Abstract: A method for the simulation of spatial dynamics of CVT chain drives is presented. A thorough description of the elastic deformation of the chain link is given. Dealing with an elastic multibody system, special care has been taken to describe the contact mechanics of interconnected rigid and/or elastic bodies. Simulation results show the influence of the geometry of the chain and the gear reducer unit on the chain forces. Furthermore, effects on the efficiency are discussed. Measurements confirm the mechanical model.
