Abstract: In the deregulated conditions governing Australian Universities, Curtin Business School (CBS) attempted to determine its future in a far more deliberate and ||intentional|| mode than had previously been the case, by initiating a regular and formal process of strategic planning. This paper traces the trials and errors of that process over a five-year period from 1990-1998. The authors recount the insights afforded by the experience and reflect on those aspects of the theory of strategic management that were highlighted.

Keywords: strategic planning; strategy implementation; group decision support systems; decision conferencing; university strategic planning.
