Abstract: The vehicle power balance presented enables the power values required for vehicles with various types of transmission to he compared. Based on the wheel power balance, the requirement of conformity of input torque on the drive axle to the total resistance moment of the wheels is indicated. The physical nature of internal force (PΔ) appearance due to nonconformity of input torque to motion resistance moment is revealed. A method of determining optimum gear ratios of transaxle differentials depending on external forces, load distribution to the axles, and ground surface characteristics has been developed. The test results supporting the plots are shown. The requirement of torque distribution to be continuously varying according to vehicle running conditions and driving modes is shown. By the formulae given, the value of power required for vehicle motion, and hence, numerical tractive-and-speed characteristics depending on the gear ratios chosen for transaxle differentials may be determined.
