Abstract: This paper briefly reviews metrics used to judge journal articles. Previous research on exemplars is reviewed which underscores exemplar|s effectiveness in communicating research results and as a potential means for increasing the quality of journal articles. Next, a typology is developed giving a means of classification of exemplars. The final portion of the paper outlines a major line of research (that of Nobel Prize winner Joseph E. Stiglitz), discusses exemplars from this research stream in the context of the research typology, and develops ideas for the integration of publication standards and exemplars.

Keywords: services; publication standards; exemplars; theory development; frameworks; assemblies; domains; relationships; journal articles; journal papers; metrics; research typology; research results; research communication; research literature; content.
