Abstract: Conventional wisdom holds that the manufacturing sector in post-industrial countries is doomed to continue its exodus to low-wage countries. The authors present a contrarian view that manufacturing can be retained, and perhaps grown, via reliance on small manufacturing operations rather than traditional large-scale operations.
