Abstract: The tribological behaviour of TB8 titanium alloy with gradient nanostructure prepared by ultrasonic surface rolling process (USRP) was investigated under four lubricating conditions. Results showed that grains near the strengthened surface are refined to nanoscale with random orientation, and gradually coarsen as going deep into the matrix. The highest COF and wear volume are found in dry friction, followed by 0.9% NaCl condition, 15% hyaluronic acid condition, and finally the 25% fetal bovine serum condition. The average COF and wear volume show a descending trend with the increase of USRP load, and the wear reduction brought by lubricating medium becomes increasingly apparent as USRP load rises. The best wear resistance is obtained for 600 N USRP samples in 25% fetal bovine serum solution. Such results are due to the different lubricating films formed between friction surfaces, where macro proteins act as an important role.
