Abstract: This theoretical paper presents the dual dimension of performance measurement as the traditional and contextual perspectives with a focus on operational performance indicators. This study argues that the business environment is an important factor to consider when carrying out performance assessments in manufacturing firms. This view is based on the knowledge that different contingencies are experienced in different business environments especially the developing and developed countries' contexts categories. Using the contingency theory as the foundation of this argument, this study proposed a framework that operational performance indicators for evaluating the performance of manufacturing firms should be composed of both traditional and contextual assessment components.

Keywords: operational performance indicators; manufacturing firms; business environment.
