Experimental investigations on tribological behaviour and cutting tool performance of sinter-forged Cu, Mo and Ti added plain carbon steel

Abstract: The present work is focussed to study the influence of titanium (Ti) and molybdenum (Mo) addition to the plain carbon steel along with copper (Cu) on wear behaviour and cutting tool performance of Fe-0.5%C-2%Cu-2%Mo-2%Ti low alloy steel combinations. Sintered preforms of low alloy steel processed through the P/M technique were subjected to hot forging at elevated temperature and the forged parts were further machined off to get wear test specimens and standard single point cutting tool. It is observed from the test results that the addition of Ti and Mo to Fe-C-Cu invariably enhances the wear resistance of the alloy steel due to the formation of possible carbides of the alloying elements. It has also been found that the tool fabricated out of P/M alloy steel has performed with better dimensional accuracy and surface finish in turning of aluminium material compared to the standard HSS tool.
