Research on emergence of self-organisation through resilience: in cities with system perspective

Abstract: This article is based on a research for exploration of framework for disaster resilience through complexity of cities and emergence of groups, leaders, and processes that support building of resilience. With an understanding for the complexity of cities, research explores through literature the three components of resilience within three networks; infrastructure, knowledge and institutions, to find parameters on which perception of resilience can be assessed. Paper conceptualises the complexity of city, interconnected components, and nonlinearity of disaster events. Resilience and self-organisation, both emerges from interactions between elements of systems and in a way forms the very core of governance processes, leading the focus from event orientation to the internal system structure. Evidences of the findings for this research are on the benefit of system thinking and validation of the ISRO model for assessment of institutional resilience to self-organisation. This paper put forward a system thinking view for building disaster resilience in cities, as a socio technical system and for collective goal of self-organisation.
