Abstract: Canals play a vital role in irrigation and therefore effective lining of canals becomes important. The objective of this paper is to compare the performance of low density poly-ethylene (LDPE) lined canal, with random rubble masonry lined canal (RR) and unlined canal for seepage along with the analysis of economic acceptance of LDPE lining. A study has been undertaken in the Nandiyam Village, Vellore District, Tamil Nadu, India. Inflow-outflow method is employed to find the seepage losses of unlined and random rubble masonry lining. The seepage loss from LDPE lining was calculated as 2% as compared to 8% from RR lining and 19% from unlined canal. From the results obtained it was observed that LDPE lining saves more amount of water compared to RR lining and unlined channel. It was also found that the cost of LDPE lining is cheaper than conventional lining, i.e., random rubble masonry lining.
