Power quality analysis of low voltage distributed generators in standalone and grid connected modes

Abstract: In this paper, the power quality (PQ) issues of renewable energy (RE)-based low voltage distributed generators (DGs) in both standalone and distribution grid modes are studied and remedial measures are suggested. The DG consisting of a photovoltaic system (PVS), a wind energy generating system (WEGS) and a micro-hydro generating system (MHGS) are integrated and coupled to a common DC bus. In standalone mode, the DG units are connected to the point of common coupling (PCC) at rated voltage and frequency through an interfacing inverter. A dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is employed to mitigate the PQ problems caused by switching in nonlinear loads. While the DVR is capacitor supported in standalone mode, the DG supports the DC link voltage of DVR when connected to LV distribution grid. The complete system is modelled in MATLAB/Simulink environment. Comprehensive simulation results of the proposed scheme along with harmonic analyses are presented.
