Mechanical and physical behaviour of 3D printed polymer nanocomposites - a review

Abstract: In the modern product development process, 3D printing is emerging as a novel technology for rapid manufacturing of components with complex geometries. Thermoplastic polymers are widely being 3D printed, however due to their poor mechanical properties there is a growing need for polymer composites which possess better performance. The favourable properties offered by nanocomposites have led to shift in focus towards development and characterisation of various nanocomposites. In this paper, studies directed towards nanocomposites processed via fused deposition modelling method have been reviewed. The effect of various reinforcing agents and various process parameters on mechanical properties of these nanocomposites has been presented. The literature suggests that additive manufacturing has tremendous potential in improving the properties of the polymeric composites. Moreover, the 3D printing technology is flexible enough to shorten the product development time. However, the effect of various process parameters on the mechanical properties needs to be studied in detail.
