Science has allowed humans to flourish in numbers unimaginable to our ancestors. For centuries, it has explored and continually redefined the frontiers of our knowledge. For the past decade, one part of that frontier has moved inward, reaching ever smaller dimensions by penetrating to the nanoscale – one billionth of a metre. Having entered the nanoscale world, scientists and engineers are gaining increasing control over the properties of matter and are creating novel applications that have the potential to transform everything from manufacturing to medicine to energy production and environmental remediation.

Among the top challenges across the globe are those of the environment and healthcare. They are of incredible magnitude. Nanotechnology is at the core of the answer to the issues. Materials with small dimensions (nanomaterials) increase the strength and enhance the efficiency of monitoring devices and remediation of environmental pollution, and act quickly against fatal diseases. Nanoscale materials will also improve products in terms of functionality, weight, energy consumption and environmental impact. Choosing the right nanoscale materials is one of the key parameters for the future direction of nanotechnology. There is no doubt that nanotechnology will continue to be developed, will be of benefit to society and will improve healthcare and the environment in many ways. But shortcomings always exist when new unproven technologies are released.

Thus, this special issue aims to assess the current status and to identify future priorities and directions in research, design and applications for human and animal health. The issue will provide an opportunity and platform to promote mutual interaction, information and collaboration on advanced functional materials. We invite submission of review articles and original research articles and short communications.
