Professor J. Karl Hedrick has dedicated a significant part of his career to research on powertrain control and modelling. He is also one of the founding members of the International Journal of Powertrains. His election to the National Academy of Engineering is recognition of his achievements and dedication to the field of vehicle powertrains, and is celebrated with this special issue on vehicle powertrain research.

Powertrain control and modelling has seen tremendous development over recent decades, owing in part to the advances in microelectronics. This development has enabled great reductions in both fuel consumption and pollutant levels.

This issue aims to cover recent developments in vehicle powertrain research with special emphasis on control and control oriented modeling.

Subject Coverage
Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, control and modelling research for reduced fuel consumption and pollutant emissions:

  • Combustion control
  • Air-path control
  • Estimation
  • Physical modelling for control
  • System identification
  • Testing or test systems
